Question 1) how many clothes can you wear under a bee suit when it's brassic out there? Answer; more than you think 😄 Question 2) what do you do when you're a curtain maker and you have lots of offcuts of interlining? Answer; why, you use use it to stuff the entrances to your beehives when you need to do the winter Varroa treatment, of course! I had a trip to the apiary yesterday to treat the ladies. It was a perfect opportunity; the theory is that after a period of cold, the bees take the queen out of lay. With no brood, the Varroa mites will be on the adult bees and not tucked up with the babies and, therefore, easier to eliminate. Varroa are nasty little bloodsuckers that spread disease, so the more got rid of, the better for going into the new season. Job done! When is a faux Roman blind not quite a faux Roman blind? Well....when it functions but doesn't go all the way. My customer wanted to dress the window but not lose her windowsill, and having explained that the blind would never be put all the way down anyway, she requested a blind that was a bit short. So, of course, I obliged. A visit to the apiary today to add emergency stores of food and quilts today. The hives still feel fairly heavy, so the additional stores are there just in case; sometimes, a colony can starve if the honey is too far away from the brood nest, even if it's inside the hive. The bees' primary job in cold weather is to keep the queen and the brood warm, and they won't risk a break in the colony and a drop in temperature to access stores. Disappointingly, the quilts are just foam pads, not patchwork ones! 😄 But they do the job of keeping the ladies cosy 💕 It was nice to see this colony so active when I briefly lifted the roof of the hive to add the food and quilt. This is a novelty! It's my first time working with a pocket weave fabric; the pattern is formed by stitching a design onto a thin cotton onto a mesh backing.
