I think it's fair to say that spring has finally sprung, and with it, my first full inspection of my honeybee colonies. All are looking good, especially these ladies, with the exception of one; I think that the queen had died off at some point in the winter, as there were plenty of stores. So many stores, in face, that a mouse had taken up residence in the brood box. My Mum and my Grandma both forged success when they had to make their way in a man's world; my Grandma in business and politics, and my Mum in public service. My Grandma, as a lone woman, worked her way across the USA from coast to coast and worked her passage back to Northern Ireland on a commercial ship during a passenger ship strike in the 1950's. My Mum earned her wings and had a pilots licence. And me? This makes things nice and firm and means there's no stitch lines on the fair face of the blind. There's a little story behind this week's #throwbackthursday curtains; I had already made a pair of curtains for another room of my customer's home in this fabric. For the previous room he had asked a well know national supplier of soft furnishings if he could have the embroidery flowing in one direction on one curtain and then the other way on the other curtain, essentially turning the fabric upside down. He was told no. But I do like a challenge (and I do like an engineer!), so of course, I was happy to oblige. My customer was so happy he came back for this pair a few years later. Not a mirror image, but two pairs of teeny tiny identical curtains together on the same window. There's a gorgeous old wooden beam through the middle which my customer didn't want to hide, and fixing one track for one pair would have brought the curtains too far into the room.
